In this episode of "California Travel Tips," Veronica Hill (http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com) goes on one of LA's best hikes — the trek to Big Horn Mine and Miner Vincent's Cabin in the San Gabriel Mountains. The trailhead to the cabin and mine is located at Vincent Gap on Highway 2 (Angeles Crest Highway), which connects metropolitan Los Angeles with the mountain village of Wrightwood. Be sure to buy a $5 adventure pass at the Grassy Hollow Visitor Center before heading out, or you're likely be fined. You can also buy passes at Jensen's in Wrightwood, or Big 5 Sporting Goods stores. Plan on a half day for the moderate 4-mile round trip hike to Big Horn Mine, which follows an old wagon trail around the north slope of Mount Baden-Powell. The hike to Vincent's Cabin is roughly 2 miles round trip. Be sure to bring along snacks, plenty of water, sunscreen, and some bug spray. When you come upon the signs, you're going to want to stay right for the mine, or head downhill to the left for Vincent's Cabin. The cabin trail heads down into the valley, cutting through several types of terrain. During the hike, you'll see wildflowers, manzanita, Jeffrey pines, and even a lizard or two. There's no cell service out here, so I always carry my GPS to make sure I'm going in the right direction. You can download directions with the EveryTrail app. When you come upon these two downed trees you're going to cross the log and head down the trail. After walking nearly 25 minutes, the cabin comes into view. This little clearing was the home of prospector Charles Vincent Dougherty, a Civil War veteran who arrived in Los Angeles around 1868. On the run for murdering an Arizona claim jumper in self defense, he ended up hiding out here in San Gabriel mountains. He built a one-room cabin with shingles hewn from nearby trees, and changed his name to Charles Tom Vincent. The fireplace was crafted from locally harvested stone, and Vincent placed two bunks on each side of the fireplace. He lived here in solitude for nearly 40 years. While you're here, you can check out some of Vincent's artifacts, including old tin cans, bottle caps and a frying pan. Be sure to leave everything as you found it so others can enjoy its historical significance. In 1895, while hunting Big Horn Sheep, Vincent struck gold. Big Horn Mine produced 3,701 ounces of gold, 2,430 ounces of silver and 1,357 pounds of copper — generating roughly 100,000 dollars. Recently, the gold mine and its surrounding 277 acres was purchased by the U.S. Forest Service for $2 million. According to the L.A. Times, there are still roughly 262,000 ounces of gold in the mine — which is worth more than $430 million today. There are a few washed out areas and scrambles to get to the mine, but it's well worth the trek. The crumbling mine complex is quite impressive, with a maze of passages and tunnels totaling about 3,500 feet. If you peek inside, you can still see some of the ore cart rails, but most of the sites have been blocked off (and it's always a bad idea to enter an old mine shaft). The Bighorn Mine stamp mill is very rickety, but offers amazing views of the valley, Mount Baldy and Iron Mountain. This is a great place to stop for lunch before heading back down to Vincent Gap. We think this is one of LA's best hikes. Hope you do too! Vincent lived in this valley until the age of 83, making yearly trips into LA to watch the baseball games. He'd bring along a sack of gold each time, placing it in a safe deposit box. Vincent died in 1926, and is buried at the National Cemetery in Los Angeles. So I’m test driving the Subaru Levorg GT-S - $54 grand, drive away, here in Australia - and I’m going: pretty tight car. It’s the whole family car package, which you can also punt. Really punt. Very practical. Very satisfying. Subaru has taken a car I love - the WRX - carnally, deeply love, and hitched a wagon on the back. How bad can it be? It’s like: Take that, mainstream SUV. If you want an SUV to feel about as emotionally engaging as a tumble drier, drive a Levorg. So: basically a really practical car with a double helping of friggin’ awesome. And I’m loving it, so I’m going: How would this baby compare with a car many people consider a benchmark? Like the C-Class? The C250 wagon. Pretty similar cars, on paper. Amazingly similar, on objective fundamentals. In fact, if you popped out of warp drive and landed here from Proxima Centauri tomorrow, for a weekend of, you know, terrestrial probing, which as I understand it is a very popular alien pastime, which would you conclude is the better car? You know, after probing it extensively, with your extra-galactic sensors? So let’s detain ourselves momentarily with an objective assessment. The Subaru is 1.2 centimetres shorter, 3 centimetres narrower and 4.8 centimetres taller. That’s a nine centimetres of lineal dimensional difference. Three-point-five inches in the old money. So the two vehicles are the same size, essentially. Both with two-litre direct injection turbo petrol engines. One’s a boxer, one’s inline. Both suck the same fuel (95 RON premium). But the Levorg makes 27 per cent more power (at essentially the same revs). And exactly the same flat peak torque response across a band of revs 2800 revs wide. Levorg is 45 kilos heavier, on tare weight. But it’s not enough to offset the power difference: Levorg’s power-to-weight is 24 per cent in front of the C-Class. That’s a lot. And Levorg drives through all four wheels, so it’s sure as shit going to get off the line faster - especially in the wet. These are objective facts, not some ‘body and the blood of Elvis’ mumbo-jumbo about alleged Merc mystical magic. You get leather, adaptive cruise control, lane departure, GPS, climate air, proximity key, power folding door mirrors, same warranty, on both cars. So that’s nice. But the C250 comes only with a reversing camera. Levorg adds a side camera vision to that. And Levorg has a standard sunroof and standard fog lamps. That’s three-and a half grand extra on the Benz - not an inconsiderable additional sum at these sorts of pricepoints.. Levorg’s got standard heated seats, with memory for the driver. That’s a grand extra in the C250. And premium paint is about $1500 on the Benz. It’s free on the Subaru. So, let’s see: It’s about $54 grand for the Levorg GT-S. But the un-optioned C250 is more like $72,000 - and when you add the sunroof and the seats and the paint it’s $78 grand. That’s a $24,000 price hike over the Levorg, with significantly less performance, and less tractive effort every time it rains. And Levorg’s got EyeSight - Subaru’s brilliant camera-based safety system that detects pedestrians, and does other clever stuff. And Consumer Reports in the US is on the record saying the C-Class’s reliability is, ummm - what’s that word? - shit. (I don’t think they actually used that word. I inferred that word. From reading Consumer Reports extensive references that detail just how shit C-Class reliability really is.) Mercedes-Benz can’t be charging more for legendary German build quality. That’s an ‘Elvis body and blood’ claim, too - because the C250 is actually built in South Africa, where they have hyenas incentivising the slower workers. I don’t think that’s quite true. It’s lions. King of the jungle. The best, or nothing. So, people are paying a $24,000 premium - nearly 50 per cent - for an objectively worse car with an allegedly better badge. This is a delusion of religious enormity. I mean, you have to believe the C250 is better in the complete absence of evidence to support this claim.

A desolate trail between jagged "moonlike" mountains. Anyone old enough to have seen the old westerns where hundreds of Apaches appear on the mountain ridge over the wagon train, will know why we kept hawking the ridge line throughout the hike.

I got dropped off at one end of the trail and left my truck parked at the other end. This way I had all day to hike the trail and could stop and shoot video without making anyone wait on me. Music by: Jason Shaw @ audionautix.com
